Coffee Fun Facts
Currently coffee is produced in more than fifty nations around the world and sustains
more than twenty million producers and consumers. Like any fruit bearing plant, the
coffee bush needs certain conditions for optimal growth and yield. This growth belt
lies between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups of Coffee

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day
are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar He
shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the
sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students
responded with an unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the
entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The
students laughed.

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this
jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things --- your family, your
children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions --- and if everything
else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else --- the small stuff. 'If you put the sand into the jar first,'
he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for
life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have
room for the things that are important to you.
'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your
children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take time to get
medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always
be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first ---
the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The
professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.'

The coffee just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always
room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'

A Brief History of Coffee

Coffee was first discovered in Northern Africa in an area we know today as Ethiopia.
A popular legend refers to a goat herder by the name of Kaldi, who observed his
goats acting unusually frisky after eating berries from a bush. Curious about this
phenomena, Kaldi tried eating the berries himself. He found that these berries gave
him a renewed energy. The news of this energy laden fruit quickly spread throughout
the region. Monks hearing about this amazing fruit, dried the berries so that they
could be transported to distant monasteries. They reconstituted these berries in water,
ate the fruit, and drank the liquid to provide stimulation for a more awakened time
for prayer.

Coffee berries were transported from Ethiopia to the Arabian peninsula, and were
first cultivated in what today is the country of Yemen. From there, coffee traveled to
Turkey where coffee beans were roasted for the first time over open fires. The roasted
beans were crushed, and then boiled in water, creating a crude version of the beverage
we enjoy today.

Coffee first arrived on the European continent by means of Venetian trade
merchants. Once in Europe this new beverage fell under harsh criticism from the
Catholic church. Many felt the pope should ban coffee, calling it the drink of the
devil. To their surprise, the pope, already a coffee drinker, blessed coffee, declaring it
a truly Christian beverage. Coffee houses spread quickly across Europe becoming
centers for intellectual exchange. Many great minds of Europe used this beverage, and
forum, as a springboard to heightened thought and creativity.

In the 1700s, coffee found its way to the Americas by means of a French infantry
captain who nurtured one small plant on its long journey across the Atlantic. This
one plant, transplanted to the Caribbean Island of Martinique, became the
predecessor of over 19 million trees on the island within 50 years. It was from this
humble beginning that the coffee plant found its way to the rest of the tropical
regions of South and Central America.

Coffee was declared the national drink of the then colonized United States by the
Continental Congress, in protest of the excessive tax on tea levied by the British
crown.

Espresso, a recent innovation in the way to prepare coffee, obtained its origin in
1822, with the innovation of the first crude espresso machine in France. The Italians
perfected this wonderful machine and were the first to manufacture it. Espresso has
become such an integral part of Italian life and culture, that there are presently over
200,000 espresso bars in Italy.

Today, coffee is a giant global industry employing more than 20 million people.
This commodity ranks second only to petroleum in terms of dollars traded
worldwide. With over 400 billion cups consumed every year, coffee is the world's
most popular beverage. If you can imagine, in Brazil alone, over 5 million people are
employed in the cultivation and harvesting of over 3 billion coffee plants. Sales of
premium specialty coffees in the United States have reached the multi billion dollar
level, and are increasing significantly on an annual basis.
Find the man in the picture.  Yes, he's really there...
Doctors have concluded that if you find the man in the coffee beans in 3 seconds,
the right half of your brain is better developed than most people. If you find the
man between 3 seconds and 1 minute, the right half of your brain is developed
normally. If you find the man between 1 and 3 minutes, the right half of your brain
has developed more slowly and you need to eat more protein. If you have not found
the man after 3 minutes,  the advice is to look for more of this type of exercise to
make that part of the brain stronger!!!

This is bizarre - after you find the guy - it's so obvious.  Once you find him - it's
embarrassing, and you think, Why didn't I see him immediately?

GOD'S COFFEE

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got to talking at a reunion
and decided to go visit their old university Professor, now retired.

in their work and lives. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen
and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain,
plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some During their visit, conversation soon
turned into complaints about stress expensive, some exquisite.......telling them to
help themselves to the During their visit, conversation soon turned into complaints
about stress coffee.

When all the alumni had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, 'Notice that all
the nice looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap
ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the
source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to
the coffee. In most cases, it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what
we drink.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, NOT the cup, but consciously went for
the best cups... and then you began eying each others cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; your job, money and position in society are
the cups.

They are just tools to hold and contain Life The type of cup one has does not define,
nor change the quality of Life a person lives. Sometimes, by concentrating only on
the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us.

The happiest people do not have the best of everything.

They just MAKE the best of everything.

GOD BREWS THE COFFEE, not the cups... Enjoy your coffee!

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Spend time with God over
your coffee...
